Reviews & trip reports

The most wonderful thing about Akaroa are the bellbirds. There are no Tuis to bully them so the bellbirds just run riot.

We stayed at Akaroa for Xmas 2005, rented a cottage up one of the valleys, Rue Grehan, within walking distance of the village. There was a stream running through the property which attracted a haka of fantails and even a black fantail as well. Kereru were flopping into the trees and doing their display flight. As I walked into the village every morning, fledgling bellbirds were everywhere, redpolls, california quail. The boat trip yielded terns and shags and a few late fledgling spotted shags in one of their shaggeries near the harbour entrance. I didn't see any penguins.

Spent some time around Lake Ellesmere which is on the way from Christchurch but didn't see a lot, I think because we didn't quite know where to go. A recent report indicates that wrybill, banded dotterels and pied stilts may be seen in Birdlings Lagoon; knots, tern, and wrybill at Kaitorete Spit tip; and migratory waders between Greenpark Huts and Clarks Road. - Narena Olliver, 2005
